Message Rule / SPAM Filter Setup

Outlook Express 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 - Message Rules

Outlook Express allows you to create Message Rules to control the destination of incoming E-mail.

You can create a rule to take all messages with LIKELY SPAM in the subject line, and send them to a SPAM folder that you create. This will help keep your Inbox less cluttered with unwanted E-mail. You can check your SPAM folder once a day or so to quickly see if there are any E-mails of interest to you. Then you can clean out this folder by deleting all the E-mails.

Create a Message Rule for Filtering SPAM:

1). Open up Outlook Express. At the top, click on Tools then Message Rules > Mail as shown below:

2). In the "New Mail Rule" dialog box under #1, put a check in the box for "Where the Subject line contains specific words". Under # 2, put a check in the box for "Move it to a specified folder". See below:

3). Under # 3, click where it says ..."contains specific words" which is underlined and in blue. Type in :  [LIKELY SPAM] as shown below and click on Add at the right:

Click on OK after clicking on Add to close this box.

4). Under # 3 again, click on the word .."specified" in the phrase "Move it to the specified folder". This word should be underlined and in blue. Click on New Folder and then type in "SPAM" or "Junk Mail" as shown below:

Click on OK on the New Folder box. Click on OK in the upper right hand corner of the Copy box. Click OK on the New Rules box. You will see that you have a new message rule added. Click OK to exit. You are now set up to have all incoming E-mail with: [LIKELY SPAM] in the subject line to be diverted to your SPAM folder.

That's it.... all E-mail with LIKELY SPAM in the subject line will be routed to your SPAM folder. Check the SPAM folder occasionally for E-mail coming from people you want to receive mail from.
